Garry Kasparov, the renowned Russian chess grandmaster and chair of the Human Rights Foundation, is seemingly unfazed by the current downturn in the cryptocurrency market. During Consensus 2022, Kasparov, a long-time supporter of Bitcoin, expressed his indifference towards the bear market, stating, “so what.” While he believes that the majority of coins are “crap,” he acknowledged that both Bitcoin and Ethereum have become integrated into traditional financial markets due to recent price fluctuations.
In addition to his views on cryptocurrencies, Kasparov remains optimistic about the future of nonfungible tokens (NFTs) as the world becomes increasingly digital. Although the NFT market has experienced a slowdown since its peak, with a 20% decrease in volumes from April, a report from DaapRadar revealed NFT sale volumes of $3.7 billion in May. Kasparov believes that the NFT market will bounce back as digital transactions continue to gain prominence.
Kasparov also discussed his decision to launch an NFT collection with the marketplace 1Kind in December of last year. He explained that he wanted to gain a better understanding of the process and showcase his life in a digital format. One of the notable items in his collection was the scoresheet from his victorious match against Soviet chess grandmaster Anatoly Karpov, which sold for 51 ETH. Kasparov remarked, “The big item in my collection was my score. November 9, 1985 was when I became the World Chess Champion.”
