Nexo, a crypto platform, has teamed up with over 35 prominent organizations in the cryptocurrency industry to advocate for an official Bitcoin emoji. The initiative, called “Bitcoin Deserves an Emoji,” aims to gather 50,000 endorsements worldwide. Within a week of its launch, over 10,000 individuals have already signed the petition, which is directed towards the Unicode Consortium, the governing body responsible for standardizing emojis across platforms.
The campaign has received support from organizations such as Brink, Bitget, Chainalysis, Kraken, Polygon, Brave, and BTC Inc. Kosta Kantchev, co-founder and executive chairman of Nexo, emphasized that Bitcoin’s market dominance and widespread adoption require a unified symbol on all keyboards. He stated that the push for a Bitcoin emoji represents the unity and determination of the crypto community to promote the global adoption of Bitcoin.
Taking inspiration from previous successful emoji campaigns, such as Taco Bell’s campaign for a taco emoji and Tinder’s advocacy for an interracial couple icon, the Bitcoin Deserves an Emoji initiative aims to generate enough momentum to prompt action from Unicode.
Eleonor Genova, the head of communications at Nexo, described the campaign as the heartbeat of a global movement that resonates with the dreams of a vast community. She emphasized that the initiative not only seeks representation for the crypto community but also aims to highlight Bitcoin’s impact on the world, democratize its presence, and foster a deeper understanding and appreciation among a global audience.
As Bitcoin gains more prominence in mainstream conversations, especially after the approval of the United States’ first spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) by the Securities and Exchange Commission in January, its influence extends beyond the realm of cryptocurrency. Genova envisioned Bitcoin having its own emoji symbol and living across billions of screens worldwide, not just existing in wallets, exchanges, Crypto Twitter, and crypto media.
She called upon the industry to collectively champion this cause and extend it to every Bitcoin user, referring to it as a collective responsibility. The push for an official Bitcoin emoji comes at a time when Bitcoin recently reached an all-time high and the community prepares for the cryptocurrency’s fourth halving event, expected to occur later this month.
