OpenAI is expanding its collaborations in the media and entertainment industry with new partnerships with Le Monde and Prisa Media. These collaborations aim to provide real-time, authoritative news content in French and Spanish through OpenAI’s chatbot and contribute to model training. In addition to Le Monde and Prisa Media, OpenAI has also formed partnerships with El País, Cinco Días, As, and El Huffpost.
OpenAI’s Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, expressed the company’s commitment to supporting journalism and utilizing AI technologies to enhance opportunities for content creators. In the coming months, users will have the ability to interact with current news content from these publishers through summaries with attribution and enhanced links to the original articles.
Le Monde, France’s leading newspaper, reaches millions of readers daily. Prisa Media’s audience extends across Spain, Latin America, and the United States. Carlos Nuñez, Chairman and CEO of Prisa Media, sees this partnership as an opportunity to engage audiences through new avenues.
These partnerships follow OpenAI’s previous collaboration with German media giant Axel Springer in December 2023. The goal of these collaborations is to improve the training of OpenAI’s large language models by using content from media organizations, resulting in more up-to-date and transparent content for users.
OpenAI has also been in discussions with major media companies in the U.S., such as CNN, Fox, and Time, to secure news content licensing. Additionally, OpenAI has partnered with the American Journalism Project and the Associated Press to support local news initiatives and contribute to large language model training.
While OpenAI has been forming these partnerships, media companies themselves have been grappling with AI-related challenges, including combating fake news, deepfakes, and protecting copyrighted materials. In December 2023, The New York Times filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging the unauthorized use of millions of NYT articles to train chatbots. The lawsuit is still ongoing despite efforts from both sides to dismiss each other’s claims.
Overall, OpenAI’s collaborations with Le Monde, Prisa Media, and other media organizations aim to provide users with real-time news content and enhance the capabilities of its language models, while media companies continue to navigate the challenges posed by AI in the industry.
