A police officer in White Settlement, Texas, successfully intervened in an ongoing scam involving a person impersonating Chase Bank. The scammer had convinced an elderly woman to withdraw $40,000 and deposit it into a Bitcoin ATM. The White Settlement Police Department (WSPD) received a call from a concerned citizen who witnessed the woman depositing a large sum of cash into the ATM and overheard her suspicious phone conversation. The WSPD reported that the scammer had threatened the victim with arrest if she didn’t send the money, using a common tactic employed in such scams. The victim was also deceived by the caller ID, which displayed “Chase Bank.” The scammer arranged for a ride service to take the woman to a local Chase Bank to withdraw the funds, and then led her to a convenience store with a Bitcoin ATM to deposit the money. The police officer, captured on dashcam footage, intervened and prevented any further harm. Unfortunately, the woman had already deposited $23,900 into the crypto ATM. The authorities are working with government officials to recover the funds and return them to the victim. Sergeant James Stewart, who responded to the call, empathized with the elderly victim, thinking of his own mother in that situation. Chief of Police Christopher Cook expressed gratitude to the concerned citizen who reported the incident and plans to acknowledge their contribution at a future council meeting.
