GameFi projects, which gained immense popularity in the crypto industry during the bull run from 2020 to 2022, have made a highly anticipated comeback as Bitcoin (BTC) aims for all-time highs.
On May 15, Immutable, a Web3 gaming studio focused on Ethereum, announced the launch of its flagship game Guild of Guardians (GOG) on the Google Play and Apple App Store. Guild of Guardians takes players on a journey to Elderym, a world on the verge of destruction by the Dread. To save the world, players must form a team of Guardians and embark on an adventure, battling through dungeons and bosses to earn GOG token rewards.
Chris Clay, the director of Immutable Games, revealed that the team plans to showcase the Immutable Passport and Immutable zkEVM. “The past fifteen months of development have been a whirlwind of laying the foundation for a game and universe we’ve only just begun building upon,” he said.
To celebrate the game’s launch, developers have allocated $1 million in GOG tokens and various nonfungible tokens (NFTs) of heroes as additional rewards.

In other news, Animoca Brands Japan announced on April 22 that it would partner with Square Enix, the creator of the popular Final Fantasy series, to develop a nonfungible token (NFT) hero game called Symbiogenesis. Animoca Brands Japan will support Symbiogenesis by leveraging its expertise in overseas expansion, global NFT sales and marketing activities, and promoting collaboration opportunities within its extensive network of portfolio companies and partners.
In Symbiogenesis, players will explore a devastated high fantasy world and solve riddles through missions based on the theme of monopoly and distribution. The game offers 10,000 NFT characters that can be used for gameplay and also serve as personal profile pictures.
On April 19, Cointelegraph reported that the classic dark fantasy game Seraph: In the Darkness, developed by Seraph Studio and built on Arbitrum, had surpassed 11,000 Ether in sales through multiple in-game NFT sales, including heroes, in-game equipment, priority passes, and more. The game is still in the preseason phase and is continuously being developed.

Similarly, on May 13, Pixels, a casual Web3 game that offers a limitless world of farming and exploration, reached over 1 million daily active players. It has generated $4.4 million in token revenue over the past month from VIP subscriptions and in-game transactions. In February, the Pixels game achieved a valuation of $2.7 billion after migrating to the gaming blockchain Ronin and listing its token on the crypto exchange Binance.
Unlike the previous cycle, new projects have taken over the crypto bull market, with fantasy monster battle NFT game Axie Infinity accounting for nearly two-thirds of all blockchain GameFi NFT transactions. However, the number of Axie Infinity players has decreased from around 2.7 million per month to 342,353.
