Ubisoft, the renowned AAA game studio, is nearing the release of its first-ever blockchain-based game. During Paris Blockchain Week, the studio unveiled the first gameplay trailer for Champion Tactics Grimoria, offering Cointelegraph an exclusive playthrough of the tactical PVP RPG.
In this game, players have the ability to create blockchain-based figurines with unique traits and attributes. These figurines can then be combined to form a team of three for the turn-based gameplay. The graphics and animations in the game reflect the high standards associated with Ubisoft titles, adding depth to the overall experience.
To ensure a successful gameplay experience, players will need to strategize and discover which combinations of heroes work best together and can counter their opponents’ choices. Nicolas Pouard, the Vice President of Ubisoft Strategic Innovation Lab, explained that the studio took a different approach compared to other developers in the blockchain gaming space. They began by creating a universe around the assets and nonfungible tokens that serve as the foundation of the game.
Champion Tactics Grimoria revolves around champion figurines with a variety of skills and abilities. Similar to DOTA, certain champions complement specific classes and specifications, allowing players to counter their opponents’ choices in turn-based matches.
During the Paris event, Ubisoft and Oasys, the gaming blockchain protocol on which the game is built, provided attendees with a firsthand look at the gameplay. They also announced a new whitelist that enables players to start crafting figurines for their champion roster.
Pouard emphasized that Ubisoft’s intention is not solely driven by financial motives, but rather to showcase their ability to release a high-quality Web3 game that grants players true ownership of digital assets. He stated, “We want to give the players the power to populate the game with figurines and understand what it means to own your gaming assets.”
Additionally, Oasys revealed a new integration with the omni-chain interoperability protocol LayerZero as part of its 2024 Dragon Update. This update aims to enhance interoperability throughout the gaming ecosystem.
In a related article, Ava, a player of the 2M Bitcoin Miner game, expressed discontent with Web3 gaming, while mentioning that the game only generated 13 cents in revenue.
