In an exclusive interview with Cointelegraph, Dan Wang, the co-founder and chief business officer of Aethir, revealed the company’s goal of becoming the AirBnB of spare graphics processing units (GPUs). Aethir, supported by Nvidia, is currently developing a decentralized GPU cloud infrastructure network designed specifically for artificial intelligence (AI) and gaming applications.
Wang highlighted the issue of low GPU utilization and explained that Aethir’s intelligent routing feature aims to address this problem by matching computing demands with the appropriate GPU power. By increasing GPU utilization, Aethir hopes to facilitate more advanced AI use cases by reducing the cost of computing power.
Aethir is now preparing for its Initial Node Offering, which is set to launch on March 14. Following this, the public node sale will take place on March 20.
Wang also discussed the global GPU shortage and attributed a significant portion of the problem to the underutilization of older GPU models. He noted that chipmaker Nvidia has previously struggled to meet the demand for its GPUs, which are sought after by both gaming customers and cryptocurrency miners. This shortage initially emerged in 2017 during the cryptocurrency bull run, and although it subsided in the following years, it resurfaced in 2020 and continues to persist.
As the demand for GPUs remains high, Aethir’s innovative approach to GPU utilization and its partnership with Nvidia position the company as a promising player in the AI and gaming sectors.
