The Solana Foundation has introduced a new feature that will connect its blockchain to any website through a shareable link. The foundation recently announced the release of Solana Actions and blockchain links, also known as “blinks”, which will allow any website displaying a URL to perform a Solana transaction. This new solution will enable a shareable link to display an interface for a Solana transaction, allowing users to perform a crypto transaction without leaving the webpage they are on. This feature has a wide range of potential uses, including crowdfunding, online purchases, and onchain voting.
Chris Osborn, founder of Dialect, the developer behind the tooling that powers Actions, stated, “From your feed you can buy an NFT, tip a creator, receive money, vote, stake, swap and so much more.” Solana Foundation’s spokesperson also told Cointelegraph that websites, social media platforms, and physical QR codes can be used to share a blink. Jon Wong, head of ecosystem engineering at the Solana Foundation, explained that actions and blinks on Solana allow any website or application to be a distribution point for onchain interactions.
The safety roadmap for this new feature will give users the option to enable wallet support for Actions and blinks. The foundation emphasized that actions and blinks are similar to connecting a wallet to DApps, and that trust in the sites and DApps is essential. To ensure security, the launch will run with whitelisted domains from Solana’s partners.
The Solana blockchain has experienced a surge in activity in recent months, becoming a popular destination for memecoins and decentralized infrastructure protocols due to its lower fees. A report by venture firm Pantera Capital noted that Solana accounted for over 60% of new volume in decentralized exchanges in May, and by May 2024, it accounted for 85% of all new tokens appearing on DEXs. This rise in Solana-based tokens reflects its strength in retail usage, driven by memecoin activity.
