The impact of blockchain on avocado cultivation in Kenya: A closer look

Kenya’s avocado industry plays a crucial role in the country’s economy, both as a local staple and a major export. Despite being the largest avocado producer in Africa and the fourth largest globally, only a small percentage of the avocados harvested in Kenya are able to reach the export market. This is primarily due to the lack of access to modern agricultural technology and the strict regulations that hinder smaller-scale farmers.

To address these challenges, One Million Avocados (OMA), a startup organization in Kenya, has partnered with Dimitra, a blockchain-based agricultural technology (AgTech) company. Through this collaboration, Dimitra has provided local avocado farmers with advanced technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and blockchain. By leveraging these technologies, farmers can comply with strict environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards, opening up new markets and increasing the value of their produce.

As part of Dimitra’s first venture into real-world asset (RWA) tokenization, the company has digitized 10,000 avocado trees in Kenya as nonfungible tokens (NFTs). These Agriculture RWA NFTs provide farmers with real avocado trees, complete with GPS location, farm score, photo, and development history. Additionally, farmers receive enterprise-grade tech solutions with their NFTs, such as soil sensors, fertilizers, satellite images, and AI-powered agronomic analysis reports.

OMA will utilize DMTR, the proprietary token of the Dimitra ecosystem, for transactions. The global accessibility of cryptocurrencies enables Kenyan farmers to hold and make transactions directly on the blockchain, facilitating seamless NFT purchases and revenue-sharing activities. OMA will also convert farmers’ accumulated points into DMTR tokens, raising awareness of how crypto can enhance agricultural efficiency.

One of the key components of the OMA-Dimitra partnership is the onboarding of Kenyan avocado farmers to the Connected Farmer platform. This Web3 platform democratizes access to essential technology for smallholder farmers and provides them with direct access to Dimitra’s tech stack. Through Connected Farmer, farmers can utilize advanced machine learning and data science methods to monitor pest and disease problems in real-time, leading to more effective solutions and improved crop management.

By showcasing the utility of blockchain and cryptocurrencies in agriculture, projects like Dimitra encourage the adoption of these technologies and help establish sustainable practices and business models for smallholder farmers. Through local partnerships and innovative solutions, the avocado industry in Kenya can thrive and contribute even more to the country’s economy.
